Know Aadhar Card/UID

Aadhar card :The Unique Identification Authority of India (UID) (Hindi: भारतीय विशिष्ट पहचान प्राधिकरण), is an agency of the Government of India responsible for implementing the envisioned AADHAAR a unique identification project in India. It was established in February 2009, and will own and operate the Unique Identification Number database.Privecy policy and Asdhar Card.

Aadhar card is not a proof of Natioanlity...
Pointing out that it was a popular misconception that the Aadhaar orUnique Identification card was a citizenship card, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) had never said that Aadhaar or UID card could be used as proof of nationality. As for the quality of the photos on the cards, which looked similar to the disfigured photos that appear on ration cards and EPICs, it was only a letter of communication and not the actual card as the government would be issuing smart cards based on the number.

Can’t use it as an identity card when the picture is not clear, but the data captured is of high quality and it will be transferred onto the smart cards. Some allegations that the pictures were of poor quality due to substandard cameras.
Up to now over one million Indians have got their Aadhaar numbers across the country. In Andhra Pradesh is leading in terms of enrolments as over 16 lakh people have enrolled themselves from the 7 districts where Aadhaar enrolment is currently underway and about 3.8 lakh have already been allotted UID numbers. For any queries regarding the Aadhaar number, one can contact the toll free number: 1800 180 1947.

Privecy policy and Asdhar Card
There are many potential privacy fallouts of this project, not the least of which is triggered by the Government's official plan to link the databases together.
Although there is sometimes a tension between individual privacy rights and national security, international law and India’s domestic law expressly set a standard in tort law and through constitutional law to protect an individual’s privacy from unlawful invasion. Under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), ratified by India, an individual’s right to privacy is protected from arbitrary or unlawful interference by the state.
The Supreme Court also held the right to privacy to be implicit under article 21 of the Indian Constitution in Rajgopal v. State of Tamil Nadu. Moreover, India has enacted a number of laws that provide some protection for privacy. For example the Hindu Marriage Act, the Copyright Act, Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2000 and the Code of Criminal Procedure all place restrictions on the release of personal information. Privacy is a key concern with respect to the Multipurpose National Identity Card (MNIC) scheme as all of an individual’s personal information will be stored in one database where the possibility of corruption and exploitation of data is far greater than when having the information disbursed.

Risks that arise from this centralization include possible errors in the collection of information, recording of inaccurate data, corruption of data from anonymous sources, and unauthorized access to or disclosure of personal information.Other countries with national identification systems have confronted numerous problems with similar risks such as trading and selling of information, and India, which has no generally established data protection laws such as the U.S. Federal Privacy Statute or the European Directive on Data Protection, is ill-equipped to deal with such problems. The centralized nature of data collection inherent in the MNIC proposal only heightens the risk of misuse of personal information and therefore potentially violates privacy rights. In consideration of the risks involved in the creation of a centralized database of personal information, it is imperative that such a programme not be established without the proper mechanisms to ensure the security of each individual privacy rights. Unfortunately, India’s proposed MNIC programme lacks any provision for judicial review at the present time. Without credible and independent oversight, there is a risk of ‘mission creep’ for MNICs; the government may add features and additional data to the MNIC database bureaucratically and reflexively, without reevaluating the effects on privacy in each instance.

Aadhaar: on a platform of myths (Report/Opinion : The Hindu)
The Aadhaar project, just as its failed counterpart in the U.K., stands on a platform of myths. India needs a mass campaign to expose these myths.
Two countries. Two pet projects of the respective Prime Ministers. Unmistakable parallels in the discourse. “The case for ID cards is a case not about liberty, but about the modern world,” wrote Tony Blair in November 2006, as he was mobilising support for his Identity Cards Bill, 2004. “Aadhaar…is symbolic of the new and modern India,” said Manmohan Singh in September 2010, as he distributed the first Aadhaar number in Nandurbar. “What we are trying to do with identity cards is make use of the modern technology,” said Mr. Blair. “Aadhaar project would use today's latest and modern technology,” said Dr. Singh. The similarities are endless.
Mr. Blair's celebrated push for identity cards ended in a political disaster for Labour. The British people resisted the project for over five years. Finally, the Cameron government scrapped the Identity Cards Act in 2010, thus abolishing identity cards and plans for a National Identity Register. On the other hand, India is enthusiastically pushing the Aadhaar, or unique identity (UID), project. The UID project has been integrated with the Home Ministry's National Population Register (NPR). The “National Identification Authority of India Bill” has been tabled in Parliament. Globally, observers of identity policies are watching if India learns anything from the “modern” world.
The experience with identity cards in the United Kingdom tells us that Mr. Blair's marketing of the scheme was from a platform of myths. First, he stated that enrolment for cards would be “voluntary”. Second, he argued that the card would reduce leakages from the National Health System and other entitlement programmes; David Blunkett even called it not an “identity card,” but an “entitlement card.” Third, Mr. Blair argued that the card would protect citizens from “terrorism” and “identity fraud.” For this, the biometric technology was projected as infallible.
All these claims were questioned by scholarly and public opinion. A meticulous report from the London School of Economics examined each claim and rejected them (see “High-cost, High-risk,” Frontline, August 14, 2009). This report argued that the government was making the card compulsory across such a wide range of schemes that it would, de facto, become compulsory. It also argued that the card would not end identity fraud in entitlement schemes. The reason: biometrics was not a reliable method of de-duplication.
The Indian discourse around Aadhaar is remarkably similar. Almost identical arguments are forwarded in support of the project to provide a population of over one billion people with UID numbers. I argue that Aadhaar, just as its failed counterpart in the U.K., is promoted from a platform of myths. Here, there is space for three big myths only.
Myth 1: Aadhaar number is not mandatory.
This is wrong; Aadhaar has stealthily been made mandatory. Aadhaar is explicitly linked to the preparation of the NPR. The Census of India website notes that “data collected in the NPR will be subjected to de-duplication by the UIDAI [Unique Identification Authority of India]. After de-duplication, the UIDAI will issue a UID Number. This UID Number will be part of the NPR and the NPR Cards will bear this UID Number.”
The NPR is the creation of an amendment in 2003 to the Citizenship Act of 1955. As per Rule 3(3) in the Citizenship Rules of 2003, information on every citizen in the National Register of Indian Citizens should compulsorily have his/her “National Identity Number.” Again, Rule 7(3) states that “it shall be the responsibility of every Citizen to register once with the Local Registrar of Citizen Registration and to provide correct individual particulars.” Still further, Rule 17 states that “any violation of provisions of rules 5, 7, 8, 10, 11 and 14 shall be punishable with fine which may extend to one thousand rupees.”
The conclusion is simple: Aadhaar has been made compulsory, even before passing the Bill concerned in Parliament. Under the project's guise, the State is coercing individuals to part with personal information; this coercion comes with a threat of punishment.
Myth 2: Aadhaar is just like the social security number (SSN) in the United States.
There is a world of difference between the SSN and Aadhaar. The SSN was introduced in the U.S. in 1936 to facilitate provision of social security benefits. A defining feature of SSN is that it is circumscribed by the Privacy Act of 1974. This Act states that “it shall be unlawful for any…government agency to deny to any individual any right, benefit, or privilege provided by law because of such individual's refusal to disclose his social security account number.” Further, federal agencies have to provide notice to, and obtain consent from, individuals before disclosing their SSNs to third parties.
The SSN was never conceived as an identity document. However, in the 2000s, SSN began to be used widely for proving one's identity at different delivery/access points. As a result, SSNs of individuals were exposed to a wide array of private players, which identity thieves used to access bank accounts, credit accounts, utilities records and other sources of personal information. In 2006, the Government Accountability Office noted that “over a 1-year period, nearly 10 million people — or 4.6 per cent of the adult U.S. population — discovered that they were victims of some form of identity theft, translating into estimated losses exceeding $50 billion.”
Following public outcry, the President appointed a Task Force on Identity Theft in 2007. Acting on its report, the President notified a plan: “Combating Identity Theft: A Strategic Plan.” This plan directed all government offices to “eliminate unnecessary uses of SSNs” and reduction and, where possible, elimination of the need to use SSN to identify individuals. It's quite the contrary in India. According to Nandan Nilekani, Aadhaar number would become “ubiquitous”; he has even advised people to “tattoo it somewhere,” lest they forget it!
Myth 3: Identity theft can be eliminated using biometrics.
There is consensus among scientists and legal experts regarding the limitations of biometrics in proving identity. First, no accurate information exists on whether the errors of matching fingerprints are negligible or non-existent. A small percentage of users would always be either falsely matched or not matched at all against the database.
Second, errors of matching would stand significantly amplified in countries like India. A report from 4G Identity Solutions, contracted by UIDAI for supply of biometric devices, notes that:
“It is estimated that approximately five per cent of any population has unreadable fingerprints, either due to scars or aging or illegible prints. In the Indian environment, experience has shown that the failure to enrol is as high as 15 per cent due to the prevalence of a huge population dependent on manual labour.”
A 15 per cent failure rate would mean the exclusion of over 200 million people. If fingerprint readers are installed at Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS) work sites and ration shops, and employment or purchases made contingent on correct authentication, about 200 million persons would remain permanently excluded from accessing such schemes.
The report of the UIDAI's “Biometrics Standards Committee” actually accepts these concerns as real. Its report notes that “fingerprint quality, the most important variable for determining de-duplication accuracy, has not been studied in depth in the Indian context.” However, this critical limitation of the technology has not prevented the government from leaping into the dark with this project, one whose cost would exceed Rs.50,000 crore.
It is said that the greatest enemy of truth is not the lie, but the myth. A democratic government should not undertake a project of the magnitude of Aadhaar from a platform of myths. The lesson from the U.K. experience is that myths perpetrated by governments can be exposed through consistent public campaigns. India direly needs a mass campaign that would expose the myths behind the Aadhaar project.

"Shahid Bhagat Singh"

NATIONWIDE PAMPHLET-POSTER-STICKER CAMPAIGN START

Bharat Nirman Sena

Ridiculous… Below Poverty line at Rs. 20 a day !

Can you tell me what can be bought Rs. 20 in current times when commodity costs are nearly doubling in few years and inflation is consistently in double-digits? One cannot even buy a litre of milk for Rs. 20, forget about having an entire meal.

But that is the cut-off point that planning commission folks have given for BPL(Below Poverty Line) families. What it means is that any family spending more than Rs. 20 a day (Rs. 578 a month to be precise) on their basic needs cannot be termed as Poor!

According to planning commission, A family cannot be deemed as poor if their average monthly spend is more than Rs. 31 on rent and

conveyance, Rs. 18 on education, Rs. 25 on medicines or Rs 36.5 on vegetables.

And this limit is for urban people – In rural areas, this figure is even lower at Rs. 15 a day for all expenses put together!

If you consider World Bank figures as to what should generally constitute a Poverty line cut-off, it is 1.25 US Dollars a day, whereas at Rs. 20 (about 43 cents), India’s cut-off is three times lower!

Ain’t this ridiculous !

And, these figures are the basis to calculate the poor in our country! Even with such ridiculous numbers,41.8% of the rural and 25.7% or urban population is defined as being poor.

Honestly, I don’t believe that 1 in 4 urbanites and 2 out 5 villagers are living on less than Rs. 20 a day (Surprisingly, this article feels that the number should be more).

But

this figure is probably inflated because most of the Indians hide their earnings to get the BPL status, which allows them subsidized food, accommodation, pensions and medical treatment among other things.

As per TOI report ::IIM-B students experience what it is to be poor
Just Rs 20 in pocket. Surviving on single banana for breakfast, rice dish from roadside vendor for lunch, biscuits for tea time. Not a life that you would expect the future CEOs from the most prestigious B-school of the country to lead. But this is what some of the IIM-B students experienced for a day early this week — just to know what it is to be poor.

As part of their elective programme 'Inclusive Business Models', 75 students were exposed to another world, one which many of them have only heard about — that of people who live with just Rs 20 per day (the below poverty line cut-off).

The students, in groups of five, went to different slums in and around Bangalore, interacted with the slum-dwellers, trying to understand their lives and finally come up with suitable business solutions that can help them. Interestingly, some of them even went on to experiment what it is to live with only Rs 20 to get a hands-on experience.

"My strategy was to have two meals — Rs 10 each. But I wanted to make sure that it was wholesome so that I do not feel hungry in between. I could not get anything from campus for that.

So I ventured into the smaller lanes outside the campus. I could get three akki rotis and two bananas within Rs 10. I know it's not possible for me to survive for a long time like this, but may be for a day or two. It was a life-time experience, it makes you realise the value of money,' said Justin T. "Mine was an abject failure. I found it was impossible to live with Rs 20. I did not touch my car, used the mobile only to receive calls, went out to Bilekahalli market to get bananas, ate from roadside vendors, got low quality vegetables, yet it did not fit in," said Varun Sharma.

While some gave up smoking for the day as cigarettes were expensive, there were others who gave up on luxuries like using a laptop.

"The cost reduction options are to buy old, partially damaged vegetables from vendors in the evenings, used oil from hotels, low quality rice, pulses or ragi, pickle sachets, leftovers of chicken/lamb from butchers (like neck or intestine), seasonal leafy vegetables or green chillies," said Vishnu P, a student, in his presentation on the experience.

From understanding the aspirations of the slum-dwellers to sending their children to English medium schools and to travel in a Volvo bus to the penetration of shampoos and soaps, the students got a peek into the lives of the poor. Speaking to dhobis, a 16-year-old school dropout who is the family bread winner and a 61-year-old construction labourer was an eye-opener for many of the students.

They are also exposed to the experiences of other players in the field like rural BPOs. The students at the end of the programme have to come up with business models that can help the poor. "Most of our students are not exposed to that kind of a life otherwise. The intention of this course is to explore whether it is possible to have a sustainable business model that can help the underprivileged,'' said Gita Sen, professor, Centre for Public Policy.

More Shocking Report is The Planning Commission has accepted the Tendulkar Committee report which holds 37 per cent of people in India below the poverty line, an increase of 10 per cent...!!While other reports prepared by Arjun Sengupta report had said 77 per cent of Indians live on less than Rs 20 a day while the N C Saxena Committee report had said 50 per cent of people live below poverty. However, the Tendulkar report with a figure of at 37 per cent, is perhaps more acceptable to the government...Gov. reject all other reports.

planning Commission said in SC and claimed that an expenditure of Rs 20 per day on essentials for those living in urban areas and Rs 15 for those living in rural India was enough to keep them out of poverty and, therefore, out of the governments social security net...!!the apex court too had suggested that the government take another look at whether an daily spend of Rs 20 could keep people well fed and above the poverty line.
The poverty line of Rs 20 works out from the Rs 578 per month per capita expenditure the Planning Commission considers ample for a city dweller to survive on.As per its report, this includes Rs 31 a month on rent and conveyance,Rs 18 a month on education and Rs 25 a month on medicines and Rs 36.5 a month on vegetables.Anyone spending a paisa more than this is officially not poor....!!

What is your take on this ?

The TRUTH about PLASTIC BOTTLES!

Did you ever drink from a plastic bottle and see a triangle symbol on the bottom with a number inside?
Do you know what the number stands for? Did you guess that it's just for recycling?
Then you are WRONG !!!!!!

THE NUMBER TELLS YOU THE CHEMICAL MAKE UP OF THE PLASTIC..... .

1. Polyethylene terephalate (PET)
2. High density polyethylene (HDPE)
3. Unplasticised polyvinyl chloride (UPVC) or Plasticised polyvinyl chloride (PPVC)
4. Low density polyethylene LDPE
5. Polypropylene (PP)
6. Polystyrene (PS) or Expandable polystyrene (EPS)
7. Other, including nylon and acrylic

Check out this chart that breaks down the plastic, its uses and chemical makeup.

What you are not told is that many of the plastics used are toxic and the chemicals used to create a plastic can leach out of the plastic and into the food and drink.

Think about it, how many times have you or a friend said “I don’t like this, it taste like the plastic bottle ...... ”

THAT IS BECAUSE YOU ARE TASTING THE PLASTIC

The WORST are # 3, 6, and 7 !!!

DO NOT USE THESE NUMBERS if stated at the bottom of the bottle!!!

Reusing plastic bottles by refilling them is NOT a good idea.
